Kevin, I did try to sow Chives here in Barbados-- I have found that the seedlings that are available here, Chives for example are about $2.00US for (6) plants, are far more economical, and less time consuming, than attempting to sow the seeds yourself. Here, as well, I have to contend with the (big) birds that love to eat seeds.

I should tell you that I started dill here from seed, the same way you are describing, and it is growing like mad. Give it a try...the SFG method purports that thinning isn't really necessary, and in many ways I believe that this is true. Be certain to use a soil less or light weight starting mix and keep in mind that the chives are going to grow much bigger than the Wheat Grass so they will need to be transplanted to a much deeper container quickly.

I have seen some references to growing chives in containers on this Blog: You Grow Girl (http://www.yougrowgirl.com)

Best of luck, and thank you for visiting.

Have you had any luck with chives? We've hatched a few in small trays and some others in bigger trays but they struggle and die after they get just a couple inches tall.

I had an idea to take a whole bunch of seeds and planting them in a shallow tray 12" by 12" and try to grow it like I've seen it done in this juice bar in toronto for wheat grass. A picture that kind of shows this is here: http://www.healthyjuicer.com/photos/wheatgrass.jpg

What do you think?
